1 3 BY CHAIRPERSON MURPHY)
1 4 A Resolution expressing appreciation to Hunter R.
1 5 Rawlings for his service as President of the
1 6 University of Iowa.
1 7 WHEREAS, Hunter R. Rawlings came to Iowa as President of
1 8 the University of Iowa on August 1, 1988, and will soon
1 9 commence his new responsibilities as President of Cornell
1 10 University; and
1 11 WHEREAS, President Rawlings identified the importance of
1 12 undergraduate education as a top legislative priority and
1 13 consistently sought the resources to achieve this priority;
1 14 and
1 15 WHEREAS, President Rawlings spearheaded efforts to make the
1 16 University of Iowa more student-friendly and annually met
1 17 individually with hundreds of students; and
1 18 WHEREAS, President Rawlings worked to ensure a compre-
1 19 hensive strategic planning process for the University of Iowa,
1 20 in part to achieve the goal of making the University one of
1 21 the top ten public universities in the country; and
1 22 WHEREAS, President Rawlings' leadership has contributed to
1 23 the state's economy through the development of the Oakdale
1 24 Research Park and through substantial increases in the receipt
1 25 of research grants and contracts; and
1 26 WHEREAS, President Rawlings worked hard to strike the ap-
1 27 propriate balance between academics and athletics at the
1 28 University; and
1 29 WHEREAS, President Rawlings reorganized the structure of
1 30 the University's health sciences center in order to make the
1 31 University competitive as dynamic changes occur in health
1 32 care; and
1 33 WHEREAS, President Rawlings consistently emphasized the
1 34 need to communicate with and reach out to the constituents of
1 35 the University and to the General Assembly; and
2 1 WHEREAS, President Rawlings and his wife Elizabeth brought
2 2 respect and distinction to the University of Iowa and to the
2 3 State of Iowa through their dedicated leadership and commit-
2 4 ment to Iowa and the University of Iowa; NOW THEREFORE,
2 5 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate expresses its
2 6 appreciation to Hunter R. Rawlings for his service to the
2 7 state as President of the University of Iowa.
2 8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the Senate
2 9 prepare a copy of this Resolution for presentation to Hunter
2 10 R. Rawlings and his wife, Elizabeth.
