  1  2          BY  (PROPOSED COMMITTEE ON NATURAL RESOURCES,
  1  3               ENVIRONMENT, AND ENERGY RESOLUTION
  1  4                      BY CHAIRPERSON FINK)
  1  5 A Senate Resolution providing special recognition and
  1  6    support to the seventy-fifth anniversary of Iowa's
  1  7    state parks system.
  1  8    WHEREAS, members of the Iowa Senate, including members
  1  9 serving on the Committee on Natural Resources, Environment,
  1 10 and Energy, appreciate the great contribution state parks have
  1 11 made to the development and well-being of Iowa, and appreciate
  1 12 the great value state parks provide for citizens and visitors
  1 13 as places of quiet beauty; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, Backbone State Park, the first to be set aside as
  1 15 a state park, was dedicated in 1920, making 1995 a special
  1 16 seventy-fifth anniversary year for state parks and an
  1 17 appropriate time to reflect on the fact that Iowa state parks
  1 18 have passed the test of time and have been developed and
  1 19 supported to the point where there are now over eighty state
  1 20 parks and recreation areas within the system; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, state parks represent an opportunity for people to
  1 22 camp, fish, swim, hike, bike, picnic and, in general, enjoy
  1 23 pleasant family outings and peaceful repose in scenic
  1 24 surroundings; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, state parks include unique natural areas for
  1 26 Iowa's wildlife, places to assure perpetuation of animal and
  1 27 plant diversity, and important sites for scientific study of
  1 28 natural, archaeological, and geological features; and
  1 29    WHEREAS, nearly every Iowa citizen has been affected in a
  1 30 positive manner at some point in their lives by the presence
  1 31 and availability of state parks; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 32    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate, including
  1 33 members serving on the Committee on Natural Resources,
  1 34 Environment, and Energy, lend recognition and support to the
  1 35 seventy-fifth anniversary of Iowa's state parks system by
  2  1 inviting Iowa citizens and leaders to visit state parks,
  2  2 participate in celebrating seventy-five successful years of
  2  3 public service and enjoyment, and use this special year to
  2  4 acknowledge and reaffirm the importance of state parks to
  2  5 Iowa's continued well-being and improvement.
  2  6    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate, including members
  2  7 serving on the Committee on Natural Resources, Environment,
  2  8 and Energy, recognize this anniversary year as an ideal time
  2  9 wherein appropriate actions may be taken to assure that Iowa's
  2 10 state parks continue accommodating Iowa citizens for another
  2 11 seventy-five years.
  2 12    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be
  2 13 transmitted to the Governor of Iowa and that all branches and
  2 14 offices of government statewide be encouraged to join in the
  2 15 celebration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the state
  2 16 parks system that has served citizens and visitors for three-
  2 17 quarters of a century and will continue to serve citizens and
  2 18 visitors into the next century.
