  1  2   BY  COMMITTEE ON NATURAL RESOURCES, ENVIRONMENT AND
  1  3                         ENERGY
  1  4                  (SUCCESSOR TO SSB 37)
  1  5 A Senate Resolution providing special recognition and
  1  6    support to the seventy-fifth anniversary of Iowa's
  1  7    state parks system.
  1  8    WHEREAS, members of the Iowa Senate, including
  1  9 members serving on the Committee on Natural Resources,
  1 10 Environment and Energy, appreciate the great
  1 11 contribution state parks have made to the development
  1 12 and well-being of Iowa, and appreciate the great value
  1 13 state parks provide for citizens and visitors as
  1 14 places of quiet beauty; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, Backbone State Park, the first to be set
  1 16 aside as a state park, was dedicated in 1920, making
  1 17 1995 a special seventy-fifth anniversary year for
  1 18 state parks and an appropriate time to reflect on the
  1 19 fact that Iowa state parks have passed the test of
  1 20 time and have been developed and supported to the
  1 21 point where there are now over eighty state parks and
  1 22 recreation areas within the system; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, state parks represent an opportunity for
  1 24 people to camp, fish, swim, hike, bike, picnic and, in
  1 25 general, enjoy pleasant family outings and peaceful
  1 26 repose in scenic surroundings; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, state parks include unique natural areas
  1 28 for Iowa's wildlife, places to assure perpetuation of
  1 29 animal and plant diversity, and important sites for
  1 30 scientific study of natural, archaeological, and
  2  1 geological features; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, nearly every Iowa citizen has been
  2  3 affected in a positive manner at some point in their
  2  4 lives by the presence and availability of state parks;
  2  5 NOW THEREFORE,
  2  6    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate,
  2  7 including members serving on the Committee on Natural
  2  8 Resources, Environment and Energy, lend recognition
  2  9 and support to the seventy-fifth anniversary of Iowa's
  2 10 state parks system by inviting Iowa citizens and
  2 11 leaders to visit state parks, participate in
  2 12 celebrating seventy-five successful years of public
  2 13 service and enjoyment, and use this special year to
  2 14 acknowledge and reaffirm the importance of state parks
  2 15 to Iowa's continued well-being and improvement.
  2 16    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate, including
  2 17 members serving on the Committee on Natural Resources,
  2 18 Environment and Energy, recognize this anniversary
  2 19 year as an ideal time wherein appropriate actions may
  2 20 be taken to assure that Iowa's state parks continue
  2 21 accommodating Iowa citizens for another seventy-five
  2 22 years.
  2 23    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
  2 24 resolution be transmitted to the Governor of Iowa and
  2 25 that all branches and offices of government statewide
  2 26 be encouraged to join in the celebration of the
  2 27 seventy-fifth anniversary of the state parks system
  2 28 that has served citizens and visitors for three-
  2 29 quarters of a century and will continue to serve
  2 30 citizens and visitors into the next century.
