1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 514C.8 SERVICES PROVIDED BY
1 2 ADVANCED REGISTERED NURSE PRACTITIONERS.
1 3 A policy or contract providing for third-party payment or
1 4 prepayment of health or medical expenses shall include a
1 5 provision for the payment of necessary medical or surgical
1 6 care and treatment provided by an advanced registered nurse
1 7 practitioner licensed pursuant to chapters 147 and 152, if
1 8 performed within the scope of the advanced registered nurse
1 9 practitioner's license and the policy or contract would pay
1 10 for the care and treatment if the care and treatment were
1 11 provided by a person engaged in the practice of medicine or
1 12 surgery as licensed under chapter 148 or 150A. The policy or
1 13 contract shall provide that insureds or enrollees under the
1 14 policy or contract may reject the coverage for services which
1 15 may be provided by an advanced registered nurse practitioner
1 16 if the coverage is rejected for all providers of similar
1 17 services. This section applies to services provided under a
1 18 policy or contract issued on or after July 1, 1995, and to an
1 19 existing group policy or contract on the policy's or
1 20 contract's anniversary or renewal date, or upon the expiration
1 21 of the applicable collective bargaining contract, if any,
1 22 whichever is later. Notwithstanding section 514C.6, this
1 23 section does not apply to enrollees eligible for coverage
1 24 under Title XVIII of the Social Security Act or any other
1 25 similar coverage under a state or federal government plan.
1 26 EXPLANATION
1 27 This bill requires insurance companies and other third-
1 28 party payors to provide reimbursement for services provided by
1 29 an advanced registered nurse practitioner if reimbursement for
1 30 such services would be provided by a person engaged in the
1 31 practice of medicine or surgery as licensed under chapter 148
1 32 or 150A.
