  1  1            SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION    
  1  2                  BY  McLAREN and BANKS
  1  3 A Senate Concurrent Resolution requesting Iowa State
  1  4    University to establish an Iowa Agriculture 2000
  1  5    Conference in order to provide information to
  1  6    independent agricultural producers regarding 
  1  7    production and marketing structures.
  1  8    WHEREAS, agriculture is the foundation of this
  1  9 nation's prosperity, providing a system unmatched in
  1 10 the world for the production of abundant, divergent,
  1 11 and affordable food, feed, grains, and animal
  1 12 products, which supports the well-being of this
  1 13 nation's citizens, and the prosperity of the United
  1 14 States' economy; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, the state of Iowa is a leading
  1 16 agricultural state which relies upon a strong work
  1 17 ethic and the knowledge and management acumen of
  1 18 independent producers to operate their family farms
  1 19 efficiently, productively, and profitably in the face
  1 20 of dramatic changes in the industry; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, Iowa's agricultural production and
  1 22 marketing structures are undergoing a transformation
  1 23 which increasingly requires independent producers to
  1 24 reevaluate business practices and reformulate
  1 25 strategies in order to compete and prosper in the next
  1 26 century; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 27    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
  1 28 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That Iowa State
  1 29 University, in cooperation with the Attorney General's
  1 30 office, and the Department of Agriculture and Land
  2  1 Stewardship, is requested to sponsor an Iowa
  2  2 Agriculture 2000 Conference, with assistance provided
  2  3 by Iowa commodity organizations, for independent
  2  4 agricultural producers and other persons interested in
  2  5 the future of Iowa agriculture; and
  2  6    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the conference be
  2  7 conducted over the course of several days early this
  2  8 summer in Ames for purposes of providing expert
  2  9 information, opinions, and options to Iowa producers,
  2 10 and to allow experts and producers to share ideas and
  2 11 experiences, and to work toward adopting practicable
  2 12 strategies and solutions in to order to manage
  2 13 changing production and marketing structures,
  2 14 including working in the federal and state regulatory
  2 15 environment; to adapt to changing marketing systems;
  2 16 and to understand new marketing opportunities and
  2 17 challenges, including producer networking, and
  2 18 contracting; and
  2 19    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the conference be
  2 20 supported from reasonable registration fees that do
  2 21 not discourage agricultural producers from attending
  2 22 the conference, trade show exhibit fees from the
  2 23 vendor community, and support provided by the General
  2 24 Assembly; and
  2 25    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
  2 26 resolution be sent by the Secretary of the Senate to
  2 27 President Martin C. Jischke, Ph.D., Iowa State
  2 28 University, Attorney General Tom Miller, and Secretary
  2 29 of Agriculture Dale M. Cochran.
