  1  1          SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___
  1  2    BY HAMMOND, LUNDBY, NEUHAUSER, BOETTGER, FREEMAN,
  1  3     SZYMONIAK, JUDGE, DOUGLAS, TINSMAN, and KRAMER
  1  4 A Concurrent Resolution recognizing the seventy-fifth
  1  5    anniversary of the founding of the League of Women
  1  6    Voters of Iowa.
  1  7    WHEREAS, Iowan Carrie Chapman Catt founded the
  1  8 League of Women Voters on February 14, 1920, to help
  1  9 20 million newly enfranchised women carry out their
  1 10 long due voting responsibilities, and the organization
  1 11 has for 75 years worked to be a voice for citizens and
  1 12 a force for change; and
  1 13    WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters has provided
  1 14 nonpartisan information on candidates and issues for
  1 15 elections, encouraged voter registration and informed
  1 16 voting, helped generations of voters understand the
  1 17 structure and function of government, provided
  1 18 balanced information on public policy issues to the
  1 19 citizens, and worked to achieve government policies
  1 20 that promote the public interest; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, the vigorous history of the League of
  1 22 Women Voters of Iowa includes successfully causing the
  1 23 removal of the word "male" from the Iowa Constitution
  1 24 as a qualification for candidacy to the Iowa
  1 25 Legislature in 1925; working for passage of the Iowa
  1 26 legislation on aid to dependent children in 1943;
  1 27 assisting in the establishment of the Iowa Legislative
  1 28 Council, the Legislative Service Bureau, the Ethics
  1 29 and Campaign Disclosure Board, and the legislative
  1 30 Public Information Office, which is now known as the
  2  1 Legislative Information Office; assisting in achieving
  2  2 home rule for Iowa's cities and counties; assisting in
  2  3 the establishment of the area education agencies; and
  2  4 engendering the passage of many other landmark pieces
  2  5 of legislation; and
  2  6    WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters of Iowa, which
  2  7 was officially organized in October 1919, remains a
  2  8 unique political, educational, multi-issue, activist,
  2  9 grassroots citizen action organization; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 10    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
  2 11 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the Iowa General
  2 12 Assembly recognize and commend the League of Women
  2 13 Voters of Iowa for its many accomplishments and years
  2 14 of service to the citizens of Iowa, commemorate its
  2 15 seventy-fifth anniversary, and offer best wishes for
  2 16 continued growth and success in the future.
  2 17    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
  2 18 Resolution be forwarded to Abigail P. Swanson,
  2 19 President of the League of Women Voters of Iowa.
