1 2 BY (PROPOSED COMMITTEE ON NATURAL RESOURCES RESOLUTION

1 4 A House Resolution providing special recognition and
1 5 support to the seventy-fifth anniversary of Iowa's
1 6 state parks system and urging all citizens and leaders
1 7 in government, academia, and business to give
1 8 special recognition to the many and varied services
1 9 our state parks have given for three-quarters of a
1 10 century.
1 11 WHEREAS, members of the Iowa House of Representatives,
1 12 including members serving on the Committee on Natural
1 13 Resources, appreciate the great contribution state parks have
1 14 made to the development and well-being of Iowa, and appreciate
1 15 the great value state parks provide for citizens and visitors
1 16 as places of quiet beauty; and
1 17 WHEREAS, Backbone State Park, the first to be set aside as
1 18 a state park, was dedicated in 1920, making 1995 a special
1 19 seventy-fifth anniversary year for state parks and an
1 20 appropriate time to reflect on the fact that Iowa state parks
1 21 have passed the test of time and have been developed and
1 22 supported to the point where there are now over eighty state
1 23 parks and recreation areas within the system; and
1 24 WHEREAS, state parks represent an opportunity for people to
1 25 camp, fish, swim, hike, bike, picnic, and, in general, enjoy
1 26 pleasant family outings and peaceful repose in scenic
1 27 surroundings; and
1 28 WHEREAS, state parks include unique natural areas for
1 29 Iowa's wildlife, places to assure perpetuation of animal and
1 30 plant diversity, and important sites for scientific study of
1 31 natural, archaeological, and geological features; and
1 32 WHEREAS, nearly every Iowa citizen has been affected in a
1 33 positive manner at some point in their lives by the presence
1 34 and availability of state parks; NOW THEREFORE,
1 35 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That the
2 1 House of Representatives, including members serving on the
2 2 Committee on Natural Resources, lend recognition and support
2 3 to the seventy-fifth anniversary of Iowa's state parks system
2 4 by inviting Iowa citizens and leaders to visit state parks,
2 5 participate in celebrating seventy-five successful years of
2 6 public service and enjoyment, and use this special year to
2 7 acknowledge and reaffirm the importance of state parks to
2 8 Iowa's continued well-being and improvement.
2 9 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives,
2 10 including members serving on the Committee on Natural
2 11 Resources, recognize this anniversary year as an ideal time
2 12 wherein appropriate actions may be taken to assure that Iowa's
2 13 state parks continue accommodating Iowa citizens for another
2 14 seventy-five years.
2 15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be
2 16 transmitted to the Governor of Iowa and that all branches and
2 17 offices of government statewide be encouraged to join in the
2 18 celebration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the state
2 19 parks system that has served citizens and visitors for three-
2 20 quarters of a century and will continue to serve citizens and
2 21 visitors into the next century.
