1 1 Section 1. Chapter 2A, Code 1995, is repealed.
1 2 EXPLANATION
1 3 This bill abolishes the commission on compensation,
1 4 expenses, and salaries for elected state officials. The
1 5 current Code establishes the 15-member commission, requires
1 6 the commission to report biennially, sets forth provisions
1 7 relating to the commission members' terms and the expenses of
1 8 the commission, and requires the general assembly to consider
1 9 the recommendations of the commission. Action by the general
1 10 assembly is required to change the salaries of the elected
1 11 officials.
1 12 The current provisions require the commission to review the
1 13 compensation and expenses received by members of the general
1 14 assembly and the salaries of the other elective state
1 15 officials, and compare the compensation, expenses, and
1 16 salaries to those of comparable positions in other states, the
1 17 federal government, and private enterprise. Under the current
1 18 Code, the commission is required to make its determination as
1 19 to compensation and expense levels for the members of the
1 20 general assembly and for the other elective state officials
1 21 and to submit a recommendation to the governor and the general
1 22 assembly.
