PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 152.5, subsection 1, paragraphs c and 1 2 d, Code 1995, are amended to read as follows: 1 3 c. Requires, for graduation of a registered nurse 1 4 applicant, the completion of at least a two academic year 1 5 course of studyor its equivalent which is integrated in1 6theory and practice as prescribed by the board. 1 7 d. Requires, for graduation of a licensed practical nurse 1 8 applicant, the completion of at leastanone academic year 1 9 course of studyor its equivalent in theory and practiceas 1 10 prescribed by the board. 1 11 Sec. 2. Section 152.7, subsections 3 and 4, Code 1995, are 1 12 amended to read as follows: 1 13 3.If to practice as a registered nurse, holds a diploma1 14or degree resulting from the completion of a course of study1 15in a program approved pursuant to section 152.5, subsection 1,1 16paragraph "c".Complete a course of study approved by the 1 17 board pursuant to section 152.5. 1 184. If to practice as a licensed practical nurse, holds a1 19diploma resulting from the completion of a course of study in1 20a program approved pursuant to section 152.5, subsection 1,1 21paragraph "d" or has successfully completed at least one1 22academic year of a course of study in a program approved1 23pursuant to section 152.5, subsection 1, paragraph "c" and has1 24successfully completed all theoretical and clinical training1 25as is required for a licensed practical nurse.1 26 EXPLANATION 1 27 This bill requires that an individual complete one academic 1 28 year of study as prescribed by the board of nursing examiners 1 29 to be licensed as a practical nurse and two academic years of 1 30 study as prescribed by the board of nursing examiners to be 1 31 licensed as a registered nurse. The statute would no longer 1 32 recognize an equivalent in theory and practice. Section 152.7 1 33 is rewritten to simplify the language and reflect the changes 1 34 for the licensing of practical nurses and registered nurses. 1 35 BACKGROUND STATEMENT 2 1 SUBMITTED BY THE AGENCY 2 2 The bill supports graduation from state-approved education 2 3 programs which provide comprehensive preparation for the roles 2 4 of the licensed practical nurse and registered nurse as the 2 5 most appropriate requirement for licensure. 2 6 LSB 1065DP 76 2 7 cl/jw/5.1
