1 2 BY MASCHER, MYERS, AND DODERER
1 3 A House Resolution honoring University of Iowa
1 4 graduate and faculty member Ms. Jorie Graham
1 5 for winning the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for poetry
1 6 and for bringing renown to the University of
1 7 Iowa Writers' Workshop and to Iowa City.
1 8 WHEREAS, Ms. Jorie Graham received a master's
1 9 degree from the University of Iowa's distinguished
1 10 Writers' Workshop in 1978 and has been a member of the
1 11 University of Iowa faculty since 1983; and
1 12 WHEREAS, Ms. Jorie Graham was chosen as the
1 13 recipient of the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for poetry from a
1 14 group of three finalists, all of whom had professional
1 15 and academic ties to the University of Iowa Writers'
1 16 Workshop; and
1 17 WHEREAS, the Pulitzer Prize is America's most
1 18 prestigious writing award; and
1 19 WHEREAS, the Pulitzer Prize awarded to Ms. Jorie
1 20 Graham is the twenty-third literary-based Pulitzer
1 21 Prize won by a University of Iowa faculty member or
1 22 student; and
1 23 WHEREAS, the work for which Ms. Jorie Graham won a
1 24 Pulitzer Prize, "The Dream of the United Field: New
1 25 and Selected Poems", is a collection of poems
1 26 exploring events in Iowa City, such as the flooding of
1 27 the Iowa River and the University of Iowa marching
1 28 band's practices; and
1 29 WHEREAS, the Pulitzer Prize awarded to Ms. Jorie
1 30 Graham is the latest in a series of writing honors and
2 1 awards bestowed upon Ms. Jorie Graham, including the
2 2 1990 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, the Whiting
2 3 Foundation Award, the American Academy of Poets Prize,
2 4 the Lavan Award from the Academy of American Poets,
2 5 the Connors Prize from the Paris Review, and grants
2 6 from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Radcliffe
2 7 Institute, the Ingram-Merrill Foundation, and the
2 8 National Endowment for the Arts; NOW THEREFORE,
2 9 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 10 That Ms. Jorie Graham be congratulated for winning the
2 11 1996 Pulitzer Prize for poetry and bringing honor and
2 12 distinction upon the University of Iowa Writers'
2 13 Workshop.
2 14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
2 15 this Resolution be prepared for presentation to Ms.
2 16 Jorie Graham.
