1 1 Section 1. Article I of the Constitution of the State of
1 2 Iowa is amended by adding the following new section:
1 3 RIGHTS OF PARENTS. Sec. 1A.
1 4 1. The right of parents to direct the upbringing and
1 5 education of their children shall not be infringed.
1 6 2. The general assembly shall have power to enforce, by
1 7 appropriate legislation, the provisions of this section.
1 8 Sec. 2. The foregoing amendment to the Constitution of the
1 9 State of Iowa is referred to the General Assembly to be chosen
1 10 at the next general election for members of the General
1 11 Assembly and the Secretary of State is directed to cause the
1 12 same to be published for three consecutive months previous to
1 13 the date of that election as provided by law.
1 14 EXPLANATION
1 15 This joint resolution proposes an amendment to the
1 16 Constitution of the State of Iowa regarding the right of
1 17 parents to direct the upbringing and education of their
1 18 children. The resolution, if adopted, would be referred to
1 19 the next general assembly before being submitted to the
1 20 electorate for ratification.
