1 1 Section 1. FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME PROGRAM.
1 2 The department of human services shall submit a request to the
1 3 United States social security administration to revise
1 4 eligibility requirements for the federal supplemental security
1 5 income program which may act as a disincentive to marriage.
1 6 Under the program's eligibility requirements, if an individual
1 7 who is eligible for assistance under the program marries, the
1 8 income or resources of the individual's spouse may cause the
1 9 individual to become ineligible for the program even though
1 10 the additional income or resources is insufficient to replace
1 11 the supplemental security income lost. The request for
1 12 revision shall be for a sliding scale or other appropriate
1 13 means to continue the eligibility of a recipient of
1 14 supplemental security income whose additional family income
1 15 following a marriage is less than the amount of supplemental
1 16 security income provided prior to the marriage. The
1 17 department shall report to the general assembly on or before
1 18 December 16, 1996, concerning the request and the social
1 19 security administration's response.
1 20 EXPLANATION
1 21 This bill requires the department of human services to
1 22 request that the federal social security administration revise
1 23 certain supplemental security income eligibility requirements
1 24 applicable to a recipient who marries. The department is to
1 25 report to the general assembly concerning the request and the
1 26 social security administration's response.
