1 1 Section 1. There is appropriated from the general fund of
1 2 the state to the department of education for the fiscal year
1 3 beginning July 1, 1996, and ending June 30, 1997, the
1 4 following amounts, or so much thereof as may be necessary, to
1 5 be used for the purpose designated:
1 6 For purposes of establishing career opportunity academies
1 7 at merged area VII, merged area IX, merged area X, and merged
1 8 area XII:
1 9 .................................................. $ 300,000
1 10 The funds appropriated in this Act shall be allocated as
1 11 follows:
1 12 1. Merged Area VII............................ $ 75,000
1 13 2. Merged Area IX............................. $ 75,000
1 14 3. Merged Area X.............................. $ 75,000
1 15 4. Merged Area XII............................ $ 75,000
1 16 The career opportunity academies established under this Act
1 17 shall operate pursuant to the mission established in section
1 18 260C.29, subsection 1, for the career opportunity program, and
1 19 the director of the career opportunity program established
1 20 under section 260C.29 shall administer the career opportunity
1 21 academies.
1 22 EXPLANATION
1 23 This bill appropriates $300,000 from the state general fund
1 24 to the department of education for the establishment of career
1 25 opportunity academies at hawkeye community college, eastern
1 26 Iowa community college, Kirkwood community college, and
1 27 western Iowa tech community college.
1 28 The mission of the academies shall be the same as the
1 29 mission instituted for the career opportunity program
1 30 established in Senate File 266 during the 1995 legislative
1 31 session: to encourage collaborative efforts by a community
1 32 college, the institutions under the control of the state board
1 33 of regents, and business and industry to enhance the
1 34 educational opportunities and provide for job creation and
1 35 career advancement for Iowa's minority persons by providing
2 1 assistance to minority persons who major in fields or subject
2 2 areas where minorities are currently underrepresented or
2 3 underutilized.
2 4 Under the bill, the director of the career opportunity
2 5 program is to administer the academies.
