1 1 Section 1. Section 602.10102, Code 1995, is amended to
1 2 read as follows:
1 3 602.10102 QUALIFICATIONS FOR ADMISSION.
1 4 Every applicant for such admission shall be a person of
1 5 honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, truthfulness and one who
1 6 appreciates and will adhere to a code of conduct for lawyers
1 7 as adopted by the supreme court. The applicant shall be an
1 8 inhabitant of this state, and shall have actually and in good
1 9 faith pursued a regular course of study of the law and shall
1 10 have graduated from some reputable law school. The
1 11 application form shall not contain a recent photograph of the
1 12 applicant. An applicant shall not be ineligible for
1 13 registration because of age, citizenship, sex, race, religion,
1 14 marital status or national origin although the application
1 15 form may require citizenship information. The board may
1 16 consider the past record of guilty pleas and convictions of
1 17 public offenses of an applicant. Character references may be
1 18 required; however, such references shall not be restricted to
1 19 lawyers.
1 20 For purposes of this section, "reputable law school"
1 21 includes a law school that the supreme court has not
1 22 disqualified as not being reputable at the time the applicant
1 23 first enrolled in the law school and whose prior graduates
1 24 have been permitted to become a member of the bar in this
1 25 state.
1 26 EXPLANATION
1 27 This bill provides that a reputable law school for purposes
1 28 of determining the qualifications for admission to the bar
1 29 includes a law school the supreme court has not disqualified
1 30 as not being reputable when the applicant first enrolled in
1 31 the law school and whose prior graduates have been accepted
1 32 for bar membership by this state.
