1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 279.58 READING OR POSTING OF
1 2 HISTORIC WRITINGS AND DOCUMENTS.
1 3 The board of directors of a school district may allow and
1 4 encourage any teacher or administrator to read or post in a
1 5 public school building or classroom or at an event excerpts or
1 6 portions of any of the following: the preamble to the
1 7 Constitution of the State of Iowa; the Declaration of
1 8 Independence; the Constitution of the United States; the
1 9 Mayflower Compact; the national motto; the national anthem;
1 10 the pledge of allegiance; the writings, speeches, documents,
1 11 and proclamations of the founding fathers and presidents of
1 12 the United States; organic documents from the pre-colonial,
1 13 colonial, revolutionary, federalist, and post-federalist eras;
1 14 United States Supreme Court decisions; Acts of the United
1 15 States Congress; and the published text of the congressional
1 16 record. There shall be no content-based censorship of
1 17 American history or heritage in this State based on religious
1 18 or other references in these writings, documents, and records.
1 19 Sec. 2. Upon the effective date of this Act, the director
1 20 of the department of education shall send a copy of this Act
1 21 to all school districts in this state whereupon local
1 22 superintendents shall provide a copy of this Act to all
1 23 licensed school personnel.
1 24 EXPLANATION
1 25 This bill provides that any teacher or administrator shall
1 26 be allowed to read or post certain historic documents or
1 27 writings at any public school.
