1 1 Section 1. Section 400.17, unnumbered paragraph 3, Code
1 2 1995, is amended to read as follows:
1 3 Employees shall not be required to be a resident of the
1 4 city in which they are employed, but they shall become a
1 5 resident of the state at the time such appointment or
1 6 employment begins and shall remain a resident of the state
1 7 during employment. Cities may set reasonable maximum
1 8 distances of not less than twenty-five miles outside of the
1 9 corporate limits of the city that police officers, fire
1 10 fighters, and other critical municipal employees may live.
1 11 EXPLANATION
1 12 This bill provides that cities shall not set distance
1 13 restrictions on the residency of the cities' police officers,
1 14 fire fighters, and other critical municipal employees of less
1 15 than 25 miles outside the city limits. Current law requires
1 16 only that any distance restrictions be reasonable. The
1 17 restriction that such employees become and remain a resident
1 18 of the state during employment remains in effect under the
1 19 bill.
