  1  1           HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2                      BY  WARNSTADT
  1  3 A Concurrent Resolution posthumously honoring Mr. Loren
  1  4    Callendar, and recognizing his many contributions to
  1  5    city government and to the citizens of Siouxland.
  1  6    WHEREAS, Mr. Callendar vigorously served the labor
  1  7 community in Woodbury County serving a term as
  1  8 president of the Amalgamated Meatcutters and Butchers
  1  9 Workmen of North America, now the United Food and
  1 10 Commercial Workers International Union, and a term as
  1 11 chair of the Northwest Iowa Labor Council; and
  1 12    WHEREAS, Mr. Loren Callendar's abilities as a
  1 13 consensus builder made him a valued member on the many
  1 14 boards and commissions on which he served; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, Mr. Loren Callendar, during his
  1 16 distinguished lifetime, improved the quality of life
  1 17 in Sioux City by serving selflessly as a city council
  1 18 member for two decades, mayor pro tem five times, and
  1 19 as mayor of Sioux City from 1986 to 1989; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, Mr. Callendar began his political career
  1 21 in 1975 in a tight race and served on the council
  1 22 continuously since that first election; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, Mr. Callendar was the voice of the senior
  1 24 citizen and blue-collar worker, representing the
  1 25 common man in city government; and
  1 26    WHEREAS, Mr. Callendar's conservative tax and
  1 27 spending messages were well received by the voters;
  1 28 and
  1 29    WHEREAS, Mr. Callendar's devotion to the best
  1 30 interests of the people was rewarded in each election
  2  1 by the voters' enthusiastic support, exemplified by
  2  2 the impressive 70 percent or more of the vote by which
  2  3 he won in each of his elections; and
  2  4    WHEREAS, the untimely death of Mr. Loren Callendar
  2  5 on early Wednesday morning, January 10, 1996, has
  2  6 saddened the citizens of Woodbury County and
  2  7 constitutes a loss for Sioux City; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  8    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
  2  9 SENATE CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
  2 10 posthumously honor Mr. Loren Callendar, and recognize
  2 11 his life's many accomplishments, his deep commitment
  2 12 to labor and good government, to the county of
  2 13 Woodbury, and to his beloved Sioux City; and
  2 14    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the
  2 15 House of Representatives send copies of this
  2 16 Resolution to the city of Sioux City and to his
  2 17 surviving spouse, Mrs. Alice Callendar.
