PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY DODERER and GRUNDBERG 1 3 A Concurrent Resolution commemorating the fiftieth 1 4 anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. 1 5 WHEREAS, on October 24, 1945, fifty-one nations, 1 6 including China, France, the former Soviet Union, the 1 7 United Kingdom, and the United States, joined together 1 8 and ratified a charter to form the organization known 1 9 as the United Nations; and 1 10 WHEREAS, as stated in the United Nations charter, 1 11 the establishment of the new world organization grew 1 12 out of the desire of those nations to save succeeding 1 13 generations from the scourge of war by maintaining 1 14 international peace and security; by developing 1 15 friendly relations among nations; by promoting 1 16 cooperation among nations to solve international 1 17 economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian problems; 1 18 by promoting respect for human rights and fundamental 1 19 freedoms; and by serving as a center in which nations 1 20 may meet to discuss mutual concerns and cooperate in 1 21 solving common problems; and 1 22 WHEREAS, during the last fifty years the United 1 23 Nations has played a central role in the eradication 1 24 of such diseases as smallpox, has helped dozens of 1 25 nations achieve independence, has monitored fair and 1 26 free elections in many countries, and has helped to 1 27 make human rights and environmental protection key 1 28 issues on the international agenda; and 1 29 WHEREAS, through its five main bodies, the United 1 30 Nations has provided a unique forum for the 2 1 coordination of international economic and social 2 2 work, for the discussion of mutual problems, and for 2 3 the settlement and arbitration of legal disputes 2 4 between countries that agree to accept the 2 5 jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice; 2 6 and 2 7 WHEREAS, because the United Nations is made up of 2 8 independent sovereign states, and is only as strong as 2 9 the support that it receives from its members, the 2 10 unique and useful role played by the organization and 2 11 the successes that the United Nations has achieved 2 12 should be recognized; NOW THEREFORE, 2 13 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE 2 14 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly 2 15 recognizes the services performed and successes 2 16 achieved by the United Nations during its fifty years 2 17 of existence and the valuable role it has played in 2 18 maintaining international peace and freedom. 2 19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That all Iowans be urged to 2 20 recognize the valuable contributions made by the 2 21 United Nations and join with the other peoples of the 2 22 world in celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the 2 23 founding of the organization. 2 24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this 2 25 resolution be sent to the office of the United Nations 2 26 which is located in Iowa City. 2 27 LSB 2672HH 76 2 28 lh/sc/14
