1 1 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY DODERER and GRUNDBERG
1 3 A Concurrent Resolution commemorating the fiftieth
1 4 anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
1 5 WHEREAS, on October 24, 1945, fifty-one nations,
1 6 including China, France, the former Soviet Union, the
1 7 United Kingdom, and the United States, joined together
1 8 and ratified a charter to form the organization known
1 9 as the United Nations; and
1 10 WHEREAS, as stated in the United Nations charter,
1 11 the establishment of the new world organization grew
1 12 out of the desire of those nations to save succeeding
1 13 generations from the scourge of war by maintaining
1 14 international peace and security; by developing
1 15 friendly relations among nations; by promoting
1 16 cooperation among nations to solve international
1 17 economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian problems;
1 18 by promoting respect for human rights and fundamental
1 19 freedoms; and by serving as a center in which nations
1 20 may meet to discuss mutual concerns and cooperate in
1 21 solving common problems; and
1 22 WHEREAS, during the last fifty years the United
1 23 Nations has played a central role in the eradication
1 24 of such diseases as smallpox, has helped dozens of
1 25 nations achieve independence, has monitored fair and
1 26 free elections in many countries, and has helped to
1 27 make human rights and environmental protection key
1 28 issues on the international agenda; and
1 29 WHEREAS, through its five main bodies, the United
1 30 Nations has provided a unique forum for the
2 1 coordination of international economic and social
2 2 work, for the discussion of mutual problems, and for
2 3 the settlement and arbitration of legal disputes
2 4 between countries that agree to accept the
2 5 jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice;
2 6 and
2 7 WHEREAS, because the United Nations is made up of
2 8 independent sovereign states, and is only as strong as
2 9 the support that it receives from its members, the
2 10 unique and useful role played by the organization and
2 11 the successes that the United Nations has achieved
2 12 should be recognized; NOW THEREFORE,
2 13 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
2 14 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly
2 15 recognizes the services performed and successes
2 16 achieved by the United Nations during its fifty years
2 17 of existence and the valuable role it has played in
2 18 maintaining international peace and freedom.
2 19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That all Iowans be urged to
2 20 recognize the valuable contributions made by the
