1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___
1 2 BY PUTNEY
1 3 A Concurrent Resolution honoring the Iowa State Fair in
1 4 its sesquicentennial year.
1 5 WHEREAS, the inaugural Iowa State Fair was
1 6 conducted in Fairfield, Iowa, in 1854, eight years
1 7 after Iowa became a state; and
1 8 WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair is considered
1 9 America's classic state fair, ranked as one of the top
1 10 three fairs in North America by the Wall Street
1 11 Journal, and identified by the New York Times as one
1 12 of "1,000 Places to See Before You Die"; and
1 13 WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair includes the nation's
1 14 largest food department among all the fairs, the
1 15 largest art exhibit in this state, and one of the
1 16 largest livestock exhibitions in the world; and
1 17 WHEREAS, three motion pictures and a Broadway
1 18 musical have been based on the Iowa State Fair; and
1 19 WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair is an important event
1 20 for education, recreation, and economic development;
1 21 and
1 22 WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair represents the state's
1 23 preeminent tourist destination; and
1 24 WHEREAS, over one million people attend the Iowa
1 25 State Fair annually; and
1 26 WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair has an economic impact
1 27 of over $70 million per year and supports
1 28 approximately 2,700 jobs; and
1 29 WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair brings Iowa's people
1 30 together in a spirit of cooperation, competition, and
2 1 camaraderie; and
2 2 WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair is an institution that
2 3 fulfills dreams, captures the imagination, and
2 4 bolsters the morale in young and old alike; and
2 5 WHEREAS, the home of the Iowa State Fair, the
2 6 venerable Iowa State Fairgrounds, is listed on the
2 7 National Register of Historic Places of the United
2 8 States Department of the Interior's National Park
2 9 Service; NOW THEREFORE,
2 10 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
2 11 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
2 12 recognizes and honors the Iowa State Fair's
2 13 sesquicentennial celebration to be held on August 12
2 14 through 22, 2004; and
2 15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That during its
2 16 sesquicentennial year the General Assembly pay tribute
2 17 to the efforts, creativity, and tenacity of those who
2 18 have promoted, preserved, and loved the Iowa State
2 19 Fair over the past 150 years; and
2 20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the General Assembly
2 21 extends its appreciation to the members of the Iowa
2 22 State Fair Board, the Secretary of the Iowa State Fair
2 23 Board, and staff who deserve a blue ribbon for their
2 24 dedication and efforts in ensuring that the Iowa State
2 25 Fair continues to be a great source of pride for all
2 26 Iowans; and
2 27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
2 28 this Resolution be prepared and presented to the
2 29 Secretary of the Iowa State Fair Board.
