1 2 BY KUHN, SCHICKEL, QUIRK, UPMEYER, MERTZ, RAYHONS,
1 3 FREVERT, and STEVENS
1 4 A Resolution honoring the Nora Springs-Rock Falls
1 5 High School Peacemakers Program.
1 6 WHEREAS, six years ago, teacher Layton Zbornik
1 7 introduced the Peacemakers Program at Nora Springs-
1 8 Rock Falls High School to encourage and assist
1 9 students to resolve conflicts through mediation; and
1 10 WHEREAS, the Peacemakers Program emphasizes
1 11 conflict mediation, empowerment of students to resolve
1 12 issues peacefully, and peer tutoring; and
1 13 WHEREAS, from its origin as a school project at
1 14 Nora Springs-Rock Falls High School, the Peacemakers
1 15 Program has spread to neighboring schools in Mason
1 16 City, Greene, Riceville, Rockford, and St. Ansgar; and
1 17 WHEREAS, Nora Springs-Rock Falls students have
1 18 traveled to four other states to provide schools with
1 19 Peacemakers Program training; and
1 20 WHEREAS, attendance at the annual Peacemakers
1 21 seminar has grown from 30 people in its first year to
1 22 over 800 in 2002, its seventh year; and
1 23 WHEREAS, on April 29, 2003, the Nora Springs-Rock
1 24 Falls Peacemakers will host Seminar 8, a regional
1 25 conference on conflict resolution featuring folk-rock
1 26 singer Barry McGuire; and
1 27 WHEREAS, it is especially important to recognize
1 28 students who are cultivating the skills of peaceful
1 29 conflict mediation; NOW THEREFORE,
1 30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 1 That the Iowa House of Representatives congratulates
2 2 the Nora Springs-Rock Falls High School Peacemakers
2 3 for sustaining and nourishing a successful program in
2 4 their own school and for sharing the Peacemakers
2 5 Program with other schools; and
2 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, upon passage of this
2 7 Resolution, the Chief Clerk of the House of
2 8 Representatives shall prepare a copy of the enrolled
2 9 Resolution for presentation to the Nora Springs-Rock
2 10 Falls High School Peacemakers.
