1 4 A Resolution honoring the City of Mason City on its
1 5 sesquicentennial year.
1 6 WHEREAS, the City of Mason City, first settled in
1 7 1853, is celebrating its 150th anniversary; and
1 8 WHEREAS, Mason City is the hometown of Meredith
1 9 Willson, composer of the Broadway musical "The Music
1 10 Man", and of his older sister Dixie Willson, writer
1 11 and poet, and is the home of the Music Man Square
1 12 exhibiting a replica of the motion picture set,
1 13 museum, theatrical props and costumes, and other
1 14 Willson memorabilia; and
1 15 WHEREAS, Mason City is the home to one of the most
1 16 famous Prairie School residential developments
1 17 featuring three Frank Lloyd Wright structures
1 18 including the Park Inn Hotel, the last remaining hotel
1 19 designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the world; and
1 20 WHEREAS, Mason City is the home of the Charles H.
1 21 MacNider Art Museum which holds one of the finest
1 22 American Art collections in the country, and the Mason
1 23 City Public Library, one of the most beautiful
1 24 libraries in the country, and is the hometown of Bil
1 25 Baird, the master puppeteer; and
1 26 WHEREAS, Mason City is the birthplace of Hanford
1 27 MacNider, a businessman and philanthropist who served
1 28 as assistant secretary of war, minister to Canada, and
1 29 is Iowa's most decorated soldier; and
1 30 WHEREAS, for almost 100 years, Mason City has been
2 1 a regional center for the production of cement,
2 2 employing local workers in a variety of locally,
2 3 nationally, and internationally owned businesses; and
2 4 WHEREAS, Mason City continues to contribute to the
2 5 culture, well-being, and prosperity of Iowa, the
2 6 nation, and the world; NOW THEREFORE,
2 7 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 8 That the House of Representatives recognizes and
2 9 extends its congratulations to the City of Mason City
2 10 on its sesquicentennial anniversary year and for its
2 11 150 years of service to its citizens and to the State
2 12 of Iowa; and
2 13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, upon adoption, an
2 14 official copy of this Resolution be prepared and
2 15 presented to the Honorable Jean Marinos, Mayor of
2 16 Mason City.
