1 7 STRUYK, SWAIM, D. TAYLOR, T. TAYLOR, THOMAS,
1 8 WENDT, WHITAKER, WHITEAD, WINCKLER, and WISE
1 9 A Resolution to honor former President Jimmy Carter for
1 10 winning the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2002.
1 11 WHEREAS, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded
1 12 the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002 to former President
1 13 Jimmy Carter for his decades of untiring effort to
1 14 find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to
1 15 advance democracy and human rights, and to promote
1 16 economic and social development; and
1 17 WHEREAS, through his Carter Center, founded in
1 18 1982, President Carter has traveled throughout the
1 19 world mediating conflicts, monitoring elections,
1 20 promoting human rights, building homes for the poor
1 21 through the Habitat for Humanity organization, and
1 22 providing health care and food to the world's poor;
1 23 and
1 24 WHEREAS, as the 39th President of the United
1 25 States, Carter brokered the Camp David peace agreement
1 26 of 1978 between Israel and Egypt, established full
1 27 diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of
1 28 China, and negotiated the SALT II nuclear limitation
1 29 treaty with the Soviet Union; and
1 30 WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the valiant
2 1 efforts of former President Carter be recognized and
2 2 honored; NOW THEREFORE,
2 3 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 4 That the House of Representatives recognizes the
2 5 efforts of former President Jimmy Carter to promote
2 6 peace, democracy, and human rights throughout the
2 7 world.
2 8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon adoption, a copy
2 9 of this Resolution be sent to former President Jimmy
2 10 Carter.
