1 1 Amend Senate File 440, as passed by the Senate, as
1 2 follows:
1 3 #1. By striking everything after the enacting
1 4 clause and inserting the following:
1 5 "Section 1. TEXTBOOK UTILIZATION STUDY. The
1 6 department of education shall conduct a study relating
1 7 to the provision and utilization of textbooks in
1 8 public and accredited nonpublic elementary and
1 9 secondary schools in this state. The purpose of the
1 10 study shall be to determine the practices and
1 11 procedures which are currently being utilized to
1 12 maintain and update textbooks, and to identify methods
1 13 for improving these practices and procedures. The
1 14 study shall also involve the determination of the
1 15 level of, and adequacy of, textbook expenditures
1 16 currently being made per pupil by public and
1 17 accredited nonpublic schools, and the per pupil amount
1 18 charged by schools as textbook fees. The study shall
1 19 be conducted with the assistance of representatives
1 20 from public and accredited nonpublic schools across
1 21 the state, in an effort to identify best practices for
1 22 textbook service utilization. The department shall
1 23 submit its recommendations and findings in a report to
1 24 the chairs and ranking members of the house and senate
1 25 standing committees on education and the education
1 26 appropriations subcommittee by January 15, 2004."
1 27 #2. Title page, by striking lines 1 and 2 and
1 28 inserting the following: "An Act providing for a
1 29 textbook utilization study in elementary and secondary
1 30 public and accredited nonpublic schools."
