  1  1    Section 1.  Section 257.11, subsection 2, Code Supplement
  1  2 2001, is amended by adding the following new paragraph:
  1  3    NEW PARAGRAPH.  d.  In addition to the supplementary
  1  4 weighting provided pursuant to paragraph "b", pupils attending
  1  5 an advanced-level class pursuant to this paragraph shall be
  1  6 assigned an additional weighting of ten hundredths of the
  1  7 percentage of the pupil's school day during which the pupil
  1  8 attends an advanced-level class in another school district,
  1  9 attends an advanced-level class taught by a teacher who is
  1 10 employed jointly under section 280.15, or attends an advanced-
  1 11 level class taught by a teacher who is employed by another
  1 12 school district.  The department shall establish by rule
  1 13 specific criteria relating to what constitutes an advanced-
  1 14 level class.  At a minimum, the rules shall provide that an
  1 15 advanced-level class is not comparable to another class in the
  1 16 district, is offered in the discipline areas of mathematics,
  1 17 science, social science, humanities, or vocational-technical
  1 18 education, and follows a curriculum designed to promote
  1 19 rigorous academic pursuit.  
  1 20                           EXPLANATION
  1 21    This bill provides for an additional amount of
  1 22 supplementary weighting for pupils enrolled in advanced-level
  1 23 courses.  The bill provides that the additional weighting
  1 24 shall be available under the provisions of Code section
  1 25 257.11, subsection 2, for district-to-district sharing
  1 26 programs.  The bill provides that to be eligible for the
  1 27 additional weighting, a pupil shall be attending an advanced-
  1 28 level class in another school district, attending an advanced-
  1 29 level class taught by a teacher who is employed jointly under
  1 30 Code section 280.15, or attending an advanced-level class
  1 31 taught by a teacher who is employed by another school
  1 32 district.  The bill provides that the weighting for an
  1 33 advanced-level class shall correspond to ten hundredths of the
  1 34 percentage of the pupil's school day spent attending an
  1 35 advanced-level class, and that this amount shall be in
  2  1 addition to the forty-eight hundredths weighting provided
  2  2 pursuant to Code section 257.11, subsection 2, paragraph "b".
  2  3 The bill provides that the department shall establish rules
  2  4 defining an "advanced-level class", but that at a minimum, an
  2  5 advanced-level class shall not be comparable to another class
  2  6 in the district, shall be offered in the discipline areas of
  2  7 mathematics, science, social science, humanities, or
  2  8 vocational-technical education, and shall follow a curriculum
  2  9 designed to promote rigorous academic pursuit.
