  1  1    Section 1.  Section 331.907, subsection 1, Code 2001, is
  1  2 amended to read as follows:
  1  3    1.  The annual compensation of the auditor, treasurer,
  1  4 recorder, sheriff, county attorney, and supervisors shall be
  1  5 determined as provided in this section.  The county
  1  6 compensation board annually shall review the compensation paid
  1  7 to comparable officers in other counties of this state, other
  1  8 states, private enterprise, and the federal government.  In
  1  9 setting the salary of the county sheriff, the county
  1 10 compensation board shall consider setting the sheriff's salary
  1 11 so that it is comparable to salaries paid to professional law
  1 12 enforcement administrators and command officers of the Iowa
  1 13 state patrol, the division of criminal investigation of the
  1 14 department of public safety, and city police agencies in this
  1 15 state.  In setting the salary of the county attorney, the
  1 16 county compensation board shall consider setting the county
  1 17 attorney's salary so that it is comparable to salaries paid to
  1 18 assistant attorneys general, the United States district
  1 19 attorneys for Iowa, and supervisory attorneys in the office of
  1 20 state public defender.  The county compensation board shall
  1 21 also consider the national prosecution standards of the
  1 22 national district attorneys association.  The county
  1 23 compensation board shall prepare a compensation schedule for
  1 24 the elective county officers for the succeeding fiscal year.
  1 25 A recommended compensation schedule requires a majority vote
  1 26 of the membership of the county compensation board.  
  1 27                           EXPLANATION
  1 28    This bill adds a list of criteria for the county
  1 29 compensation board to consider when setting the salary of the
  1 30 county attorney.  The county compensation board is to consider
  1 31 the salaries paid to assistant attorneys general, the United
  1 32 States district attorneys for Iowa, supervisory attorneys in
  1 33 the office of state public defender, and the national
  1 34 standards of the national district attorneys association.
