  1  2 BY  KRAMER, LUNDBY, MADDOX, TINSMAN, IVERSON, HOLVECK,
  1  3  DEARDEN, BOLKCOM, HARPER, FIEGEN, DVORSKY, DELUHERY,
  1  4            HORN, FINK, HAMMOND, and SHEARER
  1  5 A Resolution designating June 16, 2001, as Juneteenth
  1  6    National Freedom Day.
  1  7    WHEREAS, the third Saturday in June is celebrated
  1  8 as National Freedom Day and is also known as
  1  9 Emancipation Day; and
  1 10    WHEREAS, Juneteenth National Freedom Day is the
  1 11 oldest known African-American celebration of the end
  1 12 of slavery in the United States and occurred on or
  1 13 about June nineteenth; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, Juneteenth National Freedom Day celebrates
  1 15 the meaning and importance of the Emancipation
  1 16 Proclamation, which ended slavery in the United
  1 17 States; and
  1 18    WHEREAS, spontaneous celebrations erupted
  1 19 throughout the United States when African-Americans
  1 20 learned that they were free; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, all citizens of Iowa are encouraged to
  1 22 observe the day in a manner that emphasizes the
  1 23 meaning and importance of the Emancipation
  1 24 Proclamation;  NOW THEREFORE,
  1 25    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the third
  1 26 Saturday in June, June 16, 2001, is designated
  1 27 Juneteenth National Freedom Day.
  1 28    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate encourages
  1 29 the citizens of Iowa to recognize and celebrate the
  1 30 importance of this day to every person who cherishes
  2  1 liberty and equality for all people.
