PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 321.134, subsection 1, Code 2001, is 1 2 amended to read as follows: 1 3 1. On the first day of the second month following the 1 4 beginning of each registration year a penalty offivetwo and 1 5 one-half percent of the annual registration fee shall be added 1 6 to the registration fees not paid by that date and an 1 7 additional penalty offivetwo and one-half percent shall be 1 8 added the first day of each succeeding month, until the fee is 1 9 paid. A penalty shall not be less than five dollars. If the 1 10 owner of a vehicle surrenders the registration plates for a 1 11 vehicle prior to the plates becoming delinquent, to the county 1 12 treasurer of the county where the vehicle is registered, or to 1 13 the department if the vehicle is registered under chapter 326, 1 14 the owner may register the vehicle any time thereafter upon 1 15 payment of the registration fee for the registration year 1 16 without penalty. The penalty on vehicles registered under 1 17 chapter 326 shall accrue February 1 of each year. 1 18 EXPLANATION 1 19 This bill decreases the monthly penalty for late payment of 1 20 a motor vehicle annual registration fee from 5 percent of the 1 21 annual registration fee to 2.5 percent of the annual fee. 1 22 LSB 2933XS 79 1 23 nh/pj/5
