  1  1    Section 1.  Section 256.44, subsection 1, unnumbered
  1  2 paragraph 1, Code 2001, is amended to read as follows:
  1  3    A national board certification pilot project is established
  1  4 to be administered by the department of education.  A teacher,
  1  5 as defined in section 272.1, who registers for or achieves
  1  6 national board for professional teaching standards
  1  7 certification, and who is employed by a school district or an
  1  8 accredited nonpublic school in Iowa, and is receiving a salary
  1  9 as a classroom teacher, may be eligible for the following:  
  1 10                           EXPLANATION 
  1 11    This bill expands eligibility for the national board
  1 12 certification pilot project to include teachers employed by
  1 13 accredited nonpublic schools, making them eligible for
  1 14 reimbursement of the fee to register for national board for
  1 15 professional teaching standards certification, and for an
  1 16 annual award of $2,500 for 10 years.
  1 17    Under the Code, teachers who register by June 30, 2002, are
  1 18 eligible for a reimbursement award of up to 50 percent of the
  1 19 registration fee.  Once certified, the teacher is eligible for
  1 20 a final registration reimbursement award of the remaining
  1 21 amount.  Teachers who register between January 1, 1999, and
  1 22 January 1, 2002, and achieve certification within three years
  1 23 from the date of initial score notification, are eligible for
  1 24 the annual award.
