1 2 BY DVORSKY and KING
1 3 A Concurrent Resolution honoring Mr. Harold "Tommy"
1 4 Thompson upon his retirement as the Executive
1 5 Director of the Iowa Communications Network.
1 6 WHEREAS, Mr. Harold "Tommy" Thompson has had a long
1 7 and distinguished career of service to the citizens of
1 8 the State of Iowa, highlighted by serving as State
1 9 Project Coordinator for the Papal Visit in 1979,
1 10 spearheading the Statewide Recovery Task Force
1 11 associated with the farm crisis in 1985, chairing the
1 12 Iowa Flood Recovery Task Force from 1993 through 1995,
1 13 and serving as the Executive Director of the Iowa 2010
1 14 Project aimed at improving the quality of life in Iowa
1 15 by the year 2010; and
1 16 WHEREAS, Mr. Thompson served in the Iowa National
1 17 Guard for over 40 years, and formerly held the
1 18 position of Deputy Adjutant General; and
1 19 WHEREAS, Mr. Thompson has served as the Executive
1 20 Director of the Iowa Communications Network since its
1 21 inception in 1994; and
1 22 WHEREAS, under Mr. Thompson's leadership, the Iowa
1 23 Communications Network has become the largest fully
1 24 automated full motion video network in the world,
1 25 providing advanced services to education, state and
1 26 federal government, library, telemedicine, and
1 27 telejustice users; and
1 28 WHEREAS, Mr. Thompson's commitment to integrating
1 29 technologies to enhance Iowa's quality of life has
1 30 resulted in reducing the digital divide which
2 1 previously isolated rural communities in the state and
2 2 has assured authorized users of the Iowa
2 3 Communications Network low-cost access to network
2 4 services; and
2 5 WHEREAS, during his tenure with the Iowa
2 6 Communications Network, Mr. Thompson created the
2 7 network structure, completed the Part III connections
2 8 to school districts and libraries bringing the total
2 9 number of classrooms connected to the network to 754,
2 10 and made substantial progress toward the completion of
2 11 a major network upgrade and increase in services; and
2 12 WHEREAS, Mr. Thompson's vision and stewardship have
2 13 brought the Iowa Communications Network alive for
2 14 thousands of students and citizens of the State of
2 15 Iowa, opening up opportunities for learning and access
2 16 to needed services which would otherwise not exist;
2 17 NOW THEREFORE,
2 18 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
2 19 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
2 20 of the State of Iowa pay tribute to Mr. Harold "Tommy"
2 21 Thompson for his outstanding accomplishments on behalf
2 22 of, and devoted service to, the Iowa Communications
2 23 Network and the citizens of this state, and, upon his
2 24 retirement, wish him health and happiness in the years
2 25 ahead; and
2 26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
2 27 this Resolution be prepared and presented to Mr.
2 28 Harold "Tommy" Thompson.
