  1  2           SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION       
  1  3                       BY  IVERSON
  1  4 A Concurrent Resolution to recognize February 6,
  1  5    2002, as Ronald Reagan Day in the State of Iowa.
  1  6    WHEREAS, President Ronald Wilson Reagan, a man of
  1  7 humble background, worked throughout his life serving
  1  8 freedom and advancing the public good, having been
  1  9 employed as an entertainer, union leader, corporate
  1 10 spokesman, Governor of California, and President of
  1 11 the United States; and
  1 12    WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan began his career by
  1 13 broadcasting radio announcements and advertisements at
  1 14 radio station WOC in Davenport, Iowa, in 1932,
  1 15 becoming the sports announcer at WHO radio in Des
  1 16 Moines when the stations merged, until 1937, when he
  1 17 traveled to California to cover baseball spring
  1 18 training, and was signed by Warner Brothers to appear
  1 19 in motion pictures; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan served with honor and
  1 21 distinction for two terms as the fortieth President of
  1 22 the United States of America, the second term of which
  1 23 he earned the confidence of sixty percent of the
  1 24 electorate and was victorious in forty-nine of the
  1 25 fifty states in the general election, a record
  1 26 unsurpassed in the history of American presidential
  1 27 elections; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, in 1981, when Ronald Reagan was
  1 29 inaugurated President, he inherited a disillusioned
  1 30 nation shackled by rampant inflation and high
  2  1 unemployment; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, during Mr. Reagan's presidency, he worked
  2  3 in a bipartisan manner to enact his bold agenda of
  2  4 restoring accountability and common sense to
  2  5 government which led to an unprecedented economic
  2  6 expansion and opportunity for millions of Americans;
  2  7 and
  2  8    WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's commitment to an active
  2  9 social policy agenda for the nation's children helped
  2 10 lower crime and drug use in the nation's communities
  2 11 and neighborhoods; and
  2 12    WHEREAS, President Reagan's commitment to our armed
  2 13 forces contributed to the restoration of pride in
  2 14 America, her values and those cherished by the free
  2 15 world, and prepared America's armed forces to win the
  2 16 Gulf War; and
  2 17    WHEREAS, President Reagan's vision of "peace
  2 18 through strength" led to the end of the Cold War and
  2 19 the ultimate demise of the Soviet Union, guaranteeing
  2 20 basic human rights for millions of people; and
  2 21    WHEREAS, on February 6, 2002, Ronald Reagan will
  2 22 have reached the age of ninety-one years; NOW
  2 23 THEREFORE,
  2 24    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
  2 25 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
  2 26 of the State of Iowa hereby recognizes February 6,
  2 27 2002, as Ronald Reagan Day.
