1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY COMMITTEE ON STATE GOVERNMENT
1 3 (SUCCESSOR TO SSB 1141)
1 4 A Concurrent Resolution requesting that the United States
1 5 Congress create a standard nationwide time for poll
1 6 closings in general and congressional elections.
1 7 WHEREAS, fairness and equality among the states
1 8 would be served by providing for a uniform allotment
1 9 of time in which to poll voters; and
1 10 WHEREAS, voter participation would be promoted by
1 11 the casting of all ballots before the local and
1 12 national media announce the projected result of
1 13 elections; and
1 14 WHEREAS, voters residing in states with multiple
1 15 time zones face the prospect of hearing media
1 16 projections of presumed winners before casting a
1 17 ballot; and
1 18 WHEREAS, those media projections may ultimately be
1 19 found to be in error; NOW THEREFORE,
1 20 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
1 21 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the Iowa General
1 22 Assembly urges the Congress of the United States to
1 23 promote equality in voting among the states and
1 24 protect voters from premature and possibly erroneous
1 25 election result projections; and
1 26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa General
1 27 Assembly urges the Congress of the United States to
1 28 enact legislation to standardize poll closing times;
1 29 and
1 30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
2 1 Resolution be forwarded to the President of the United
2 2 States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House
2 3 of Representatives, and members of Iowa's
2 4 congressional delegation.
