1 2 BY KRAMER, McKIBBEN, SCHUERER, LUNDBY, VEENSTRA,
1 3 McKINLEY, DRAKE, REDWINE, KING, FREEMAN, REHBERG,
1 4 JOHNSON, BOETTGER, ZIEMAN, and IVERSON
1 5 A Concurrent Resolution supporting the admission of the
1 6 Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to
1 7 the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
1 8 WHEREAS, the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and
1 9 Lithuania are free, democratic, and independent
1 10 nations with a long and proud history; and
1 11 WHEREAS, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization
1 12 (NATO) is dedicated to the preservation of the freedom
1 13 and security of its member nations; and
1 14 WHEREAS, the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and
1 15 Lithuania desire to share in both the benefits and
1 16 obligations of NATO in pursuing the development,
1 17 growth, and promotion of democratic institutions and
1 18 ensuring free market economic development; and
1 19 WHEREAS, those nations recognize their
1 20 responsibilities as democratic nations and wish to
1 21 exercise these responsibilities in concert with
1 22 members of NATO; and
1 23 WHEREAS, the Baltic States desire to become part of
1 24 NATO's efforts to prevent the extremes of nationalism;
1 25 and
1 26 WHEREAS, the security of the United States is
1 27 dependent upon the stability of central Europe; NOW
1 28 THEREFORE,
1 29 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
1 30 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the Iowa General
2 1 Assembly supports the admission of the Baltic States
2 2 of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to the North
2 3 Atlantic Treaty Organization.
2 4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
2 5 Resolution be sent by the Secretary of the Senate to
2 6 the President of the United States; the President of
2 7 the Senate of the United States; the Committee on
2 8 Foreign Relations of the Senate of the United States;
2 9 the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the
2 10 United States; the Committee on International
2 11 Relations of the House of Representatives of the
2 12 United States; and members of Iowa's congressional
2 13 delegation.
