1 3 RELATIONS RESOLUTION BY CHAIRPERSON TYRRELL)
1 4 A Concurrent Resolution designating May 1, 2002, as
1 5 Iowa Right-to-Work Day.
1 6 WHEREAS, right-to-work laws guarantee that a person cannot
1 7 be compelled, as a condition of employment, to join or not to
1 8 join a labor union, or to pay dues to a labor union; and
1 9 WHEREAS, section 14(b) of the federal Taft-Hartley Act of
1 10 1947 established the rights of states to enact right-to-work
1 11 laws for workers in their state; and
1 12 WHEREAS, Iowa's Fifty-second General Assembly enacted
1 13 Iowa's right-to-work law by making it unlawful to discriminate
1 14 in the employment of any person either because of membership
1 15 or nonmembership in a labor union; and
1 16 WHEREAS, Iowa's right-to-work law became effective on May
1 17 1, 1947, and has remained in full force and effect since that
1 18 day; and
1 19 WHEREAS, May 1, 2002, will be the fifty-fifth anniversary
1 20 of Iowa's enactment of a right-to-work law; NOW THEREFORE,
1 21 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE SENATE
1 22 CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly designates the day
1 23 of May 1, 2002, as Iowa Right-To-Work Day.
