  1  1                HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2             BY  LARSON, JACOBS, and METCALF
  1  3 A Resolution honoring the Association of Junior Leagues.
  1  4    WHEREAS, the Association of Junior Leagues
  1  5 International (AJLI) was started in 1901 in New York
  1  6 City by 19-year-old socialite Mary Harriman to improve
  1  7 the conditions in settlement houses on New York's
  1  8 lower east side through programs addressing child
  1  9 health, nutrition, and literacy; and
  1 10    WHEREAS, the Junior League became an international
  1 11 organization in 1912, and now has over 295 chapters
  1 12 and 193,000 members dedicated to improving their
  1 13 communities through the effective action and
  1 14 leadership of trained volunteers; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, the purpose of the Junior Leagues has
  1 16 always been exclusively educational and charitable,
  1 17 which has been manifested in many ways, from the
  1 18 sponsoring of nutrition centers and immunization
  1 19 programs to the promotion of women's suffrage to
  1 20 promotion of women's leadership, power, and
  1 21 achievement; and
  1 22    WHEREAS, the Junior League State Public Affairs
  1 23 Committees started in the 1930s to influence public
  1 24 welfare policy and the Iowa committee continues to be
  1 25 active and dedicated to improving the lives of women
  1 26 and children in Iowa; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, there are five Junior League chapters in
  1 28 Iowa, in Sioux City, Des Moines, Waterloo-Cedar Falls,
  1 29 Cedar Rapids, and the Quad Cities, with a combined
  1 30 membership of over 2,000 active and sustaining
  2  1 members; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, the combined efforts of the Iowa Junior
  2  3 League chapters have resulted in the donation of
  2  4 thousands of volunteer hours to the betterment of Iowa
  2  5 communities; and
  2  6    WHEREAS, the Junior League of Iowa numbers among
  2  7 its accomplishments the construction of a child care
  2  8 center and playgrounds, a homeless shelter, and a
  2  9 science station; the creation of board training
  2 10 programs and community leader programs; and many more
  2 11 projects and programs to benefit the people of Iowa;
  2 12 and
  2 13    WHEREAS, the Association of Junior Leagues
  2 14 International is preparing for its centennial
  2 15 celebration of 100 years of volunteer community
  2 16 service and leadership in April 2001; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 17    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 18 That the House of Representatives honor and recognize
  2 19 the Association of Junior Leagues International, and
  2 20 the Iowa chapters specifically, for the past 100 years
  2 21 of dedication, service, and continued outstanding
  2 22 educational and charitable efforts in Iowa.
  2 23    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, following adoption of
  2 24 this Resolution, the Chief Clerk of the House of
  2 25 Representatives send copies to each of the five Iowa
  2 26 chapters of the Association of Junior Leagues
  2 27 International.
