1 2 BY MASCHER, LENSING, MYERS, and FOEGE
1 3 A House Resolution honoring Christine Grant, former Women's
1 4 Athletic Director of the University of Iowa.
1 5 WHEREAS, Christine Grant, the Women's Athletic
1 6 Director at the University of Iowa for 27 years, has
1 7 recently retired from that position which she held
1 8 since the department was established in 1973; and
1 9 WHEREAS, during her tenure, Christine Grant
1 10 supervised a coaching staff which has led Iowa women's
1 11 teams to win or share in 25 Big Ten championships,
1 12 having nationally ranked teams in women's basketball
1 13 and softball, and supervising varsity teams of field
1 14 hockey, swimming, diving, tennis, golf, gymnastics,
1 15 track and cross country, and volleyball, and adding
1 16 soccer and rowing; and
1 17 WHEREAS, in addition to her teaching, coaching, and
1 18 administrative duties, Christine Grant was a founding
1 19 member of the Association for Intercollegiate
1 20 Athletics for Women, serving as President of that
1 21 association from 1979-82, and was on the Board of
1 22 Directors of the National Association of Collegiate
1 23 Women's Athletic Administrators, serving as President
1 24 of that association from 1987-98 and chairing the
1 25 Gender Equity Committee; and
1 26 WHEREAS, Christine Grant has received numerous
1 27 academic and professional awards, including the
1 28 "National Administrator of the Year" award from both
1 29 the National Association of Collegiate Women's
1 30 Athletic Administrators and the Women's Basketball
2 1 Coaches' Association; the NCAA Honda Award of Merit
2 2 for Outstanding Achievement in Women's Collegiate
2 3 Athletics; a Presidential Award from and inducted into
2 4 the Hall of Fame of the National Girls and Women in
2 5 Sport; and was the corecipient of the first Lou Henry
2 6 Hoover Award for outstanding contributions to the
2 7 development of girls' and women's sports in Iowa; and
2 8 WHEREAS, Christine Grant has a become a familiar
2 9 name and voice in the world of sports as a crusader
2 10 for gender equity in intercollegiate athletics, with
2 11 her long association with Title IX and gender equity
2 12 activism including testimony before United States
2 13 House of Representatives' subcommittees, serving as an
2 14 expert consultant to the Health Education and Welfare
2 15 Office for Civil Rights Title IX Task Force, and
2 16 testimony as an expert witness in landmark sports
2 17 discrimination lawsuits; and
2 18 WHEREAS, Christine Grant has emphasized competence
2 19 and high integrity for the staff and players of the
2 20 University of Iowa women's teams; NOW THEREFORE,
2 21 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 22 That Christine Grant be recognized and congratulated
2 23 for her outstanding commitment to women's sports and
2 24 to the University of Iowa, and wished a well-earned,
2 25 pleasant retirement.
