PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. ____ 1 2 BY BARRY, LARSON, DOLECHECK, BRADLEY, HUSEMAN, 1 3 KETTERING, BROERS, SUKUP, SIEVERS, FINCH, HOUSER, 1 4 METCALF, RAECKER, GIPP, SIEGRIST, CORMACK, DIX, 1 5 BRUNKHORST, HORBACH, RANTS, JOHNSON, HEATON, JENKINS, 1 6 BODDICKER, ROBERTS, DE BOEF, TYMESON, BOAL, ELGIN, 1 7 HOVERSTEN, HOFFMAN, HANSEN, BRADLEY, ALONS, TEIG, 1 8 WEIDMAN, VAN ENGELENHOVEN, EDDIE, GARMAN, REKOW, 1 9 MANTERNACH, ARNOLD, and BRAUNS 1 10 A House Resolution to recognize February 6 as "Ronald 1 11 Reagan Day". 1 12 WHEREAS, President Ronald Wilson Reagan, a man of 1 13 humble background, worked throughout his life serving 1 14 freedom and advancing the public good, having been 1 15 employed as an entertainer, union leader, corporate 1 16 spokesman, Governor of California, and President of 1 17 the United States; and 1 18 WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan began his career by 1 19 broadcasting radio announcements and advertising at 1 20 radio station WOC in Davenport, Iowa, in 1932, going 1 21 on to become the sports announcer at WHO radio in Des 1 22 Moines when the stations merged, until 1937 when he 1 23 traveled to California to cover baseball spring 1 24 training, and was signed by Warner Brothers to appear 1 25 in motion pictures; and 1 26 WHEREAS, President Reagan served with honor and 1 27 distinction for two terms as the 40th President of the 1 28 United States of America; the second of which he was 1 29 victorious in 49 of the 50 states in the general 1 30 election, earning the confidence of three-fifths of 2 1 the electorate, a record unsurpassed in the history of 2 2 American presidential elections; and 2 3 WHEREAS, in 1981, when Ronald Reagan was 2 4 inaugurated President, he inherited a disillusioned 2 5 nation shackled by rampant inflation and high 2 6 unemployment; and 2 7 WHEREAS, during Mr. Reagan's presidency, he worked 2 8 in a bipartisan manner to enact his bold agenda of 2 9 restoring accountability and common sense to 2 10 government which led to an unprecedented economic 2 11 expansion and opportunity for millions of Americans; 2 12 and 2 13 WHEREAS, President Reagan's commitment to an active 2 14 social policy agenda for the nation's children helped 2 15 lower crime and drug use; and 2 16 WHEREAS, President Reagan's commitment to the armed 2 17 forces contributed to the restoration of pride in 2 18 America, her values and those cherished by the free 2 19 world, and prepared America's armed forces to win the 2 20 Gulf War; and 2 21 WHEREAS, President Reagan's vision of "peace 2 22 through strength" led to the end of the Cold War and 2 23 the ultimate demise of the Soviet Union, guaranteeing 2 24 basic human rights for millions of people; and 2 25 WHEREAS, on February 6, 2001, Ronald Reagan will 2 26 reach the age of 90, thus becoming both the oldest 2 27 active and oldest former President in the history of 2 28 our nation; NOW THEREFORE, 2 29 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 2 30 That the House of Representatives hereby recognizes 3 1 February 6, 2001, as "Ronald Reagan Day". 3 2 LSB 2404HH 79 3 3 vl/cls/14.1
