1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 273.14 SCHOOL DISTRICT PETITION
1 2 TO JOIN.
1 3 The board of directors of a school district may petition
1 4 the board of directors of an area education agency that is
1 5 contiguous to the school district to join the contiguous area
1 6 education agency. If the contiguous area education agency
1 7 board approves the petition, the area education agency shall
1 8 submit the petition to the state board of education for
1 9 approval. Reorganization to include the school district
1 10 within the contiguous area education agency shall take effect
1 11 on July 1 of the school year following approval of the
1 12 petition by the state board. A school district may appeal to
1 13 the state board the decision of an area education agency board
1 14 to deny the school district's petition.
1 15 EXPLANATION
1 16 This bill permits the board of directors of a school
1 17 district to petition a contiguous area education agency to
1 18 join the contiguous area education agency. If the contiguous
1 19 area education agency approves, it must submit the petition to
1 20 the state board of education for approval. If an agency does
1 21 not approve the petition, the school district may appeal the
1 22 denial to the state board of education.
