1 1 Section 1. Section 199.1, Code 2001, is amended by adding
1 2 the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 6A. "Genetically modified" means to alter
1 4 the genetic characteristics of a plant by modifying the
1 5 deoxyribonucleic acid of the plant's seed in a manner other
1 6 than by breeding or pollination.
1 7 Sec. 2. Section 199.3, subsection 1, Code 2001, is amended
1 8 by adding the following new paragraph:
1 9 NEW PARAGRAPH. f. An identification of genetically
1 10 modified agricultural or vegetable seed. If the agricultural
1 11 or vegetable seed is genetically modified, the label shall
1 12 provide information regarding recommended planting and
1 13 management practices required to minimize the risk of
1 14 transferring gene characteristics to other varieties of
1 15 plants.
1 16 EXPLANATION
1 17 This bill amends Code chapter 199 that regulates the
1 18 labeling of agricultural and vegetable seed. The bill
1 19 requires that the label include recommended planting and
1 20 management practices required to minimize the risk of
1 21 transferring gene characteristics to other varieties of
1 22 plants. A person violating the provisions of the bill is
1 23 guilty of a simple misdemeanor.
