1 2 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

1 5 A Concurrent Resolution to recognize February 6,
1 6 2002, as Ronald Reagan Day in the State of Iowa.
1 7 WHEREAS, President Ronald Wilson Reagan, a man of
1 8 humble background, worked throughout his life serving
1 9 freedom and advancing the public good, having been
1 10 employed as an entertainer, union leader, corporate
1 11 spokesman, Governor of California, and President of
1 12 the United States; and
1 13 WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan began his career by
1 14 broadcasting radio announcements and advertisements at
1 15 radio station WOC in Davenport, Iowa, in 1932,
1 16 becoming the sports announcer at WHO radio in Des
1 17 Moines when the stations merged, until 1937, when he
1 18 traveled to California to cover baseball spring
1 19 training, and was signed by Warner Brothers to appear
1 20 in motion pictures; and
1 21 WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan served with honor and
1 22 distinction for two terms as the fortieth President of
1 23 the United States of America, the second term of which
1 24 he earned the confidence of sixty percent of the
1 25 electorate and was victorious in forty-nine of the
1 26 fifty states in the general election, a record
1 27 unsurpassed in the history of American presidential
1 28 elections; and
1 29 WHEREAS, in 1981, when Ronald Reagan was
1 30 inaugurated President, he inherited a disillusioned
2 1 nation shackled by rampant inflation and high
2 2 unemployment; and
2 3 WHEREAS, during Mr. Reagan's presidency, he worked
2 4 in a bipartisan manner to enact his bold agenda of
2 5 restoring accountability and common sense to
2 6 government which led to an unprecedented economic
2 7 expansion and opportunity for millions of Americans;
2 8 and
2 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's commitment to an active
2 10 social policy agenda for the nation's children helped
2 11 lower crime and drug use in the nation's communities
2 12 and neighborhoods; and
2 13 WHEREAS, President Reagan's commitment to the armed
2 14 forces contributed to the restoration of pride in
2 15 America, her values and those cherished by the free
2 16 world, and prepared America's armed forces to win the
2 17 Gulf War; and
2 18 WHEREAS, President Reagan's vision of "peace
2 19 through strength" led to the end of the Cold War and
2 20 the ultimate demise of the Soviet Union, guaranteeing
2 21 basic human rights for millions of people; and
2 22 WHEREAS, on February 6, 2002, Ronald Reagan will
2 23 have reached the age of ninety-one years; NOW
2 24 THEREFORE,
2 25 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
2 26 SENATE CONCURRING, That the General Assembly of the
2 27 State of Iowa hereby recognizes February 6, 2002, as
2 28 Ronald Reagan Day.
