  1  1           HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2              BY  COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE
  1  3                  (SUCCESSOR TO HSB 87)
  1  4 A Concurrent Resolution honoring Herb Plambeck.
  1  5    WHEREAS, Herb Plambeck has been the "voice of the
  1  6 family farm" since joining WHO radio in Des Moines in
  1  7 1936 as the first full-time farm broadcaster in the
  1  8 nation hired by a commercial radio station, a position
  1  9 he held for 34 years; and
  1 10    WHEREAS, Herb Plambeck also traveled the world as a
  1 11 news correspondent, reporting from battlefields and
  1 12 palaces, interviewing 10 United States presidents as
  1 13 well as kings and dictators, and being among the first
  1 14 Americans to enter Adolf Hitler's mountaintop retreat
  1 15 at the close of World War II; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, Herb Plambeck's career spanned the decades
  1 17 from his early farm days plowing in Scott County,
  1 18 through attendance at Iowa State University, work as a
  1 19 newspaper farm editor in Davenport, his years at WHO,
  1 20 and service as assistant to two United States
  1 21 secretarys of agriculture, to a weekend gardening
  1 22 radio program and guest appearances on WHO until his
  1 23 recent death; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, Herb Plambeck made historical first radio
  1 25 farm broadcast reports from the Soviet Union in 1955
  1 26 and the People's Republic of China in 1976; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, Herb Plambeck wrote numerous newspaper and
  1 28 magazine articles, 11 books and booklets, was awarded
  1 29 honor and acclaim, but took his greatest pleasure in
  1 30 public service, earning the trust of Iowa's farm
  2  1 families through his hard work and honesty; NOW
  2  2 THEREFORE,
  2  3    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
  2  4 SENATE CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
  2  5 recognizes Herb Plambeck posthumously for his
  2  6 achievements, recognizing not only his career
  2  7 accomplishments but also his contribution to Iowa's
  2  8 family farm heritage; and
  2  9    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That members of the General
  2 10 Assembly, including members serving on the Committees
  2 11 on Agriculture, bid farewell to Herb Plambeck
  2 12 remembering "that's the way it was"; and
  2 13    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the
  2 14 House of Representatives deliver a copy of this
  2 15 resolution to Laura Plambeck of Des Moines, Mary
  2 16 Munger of Sioux City, and James Plambeck of Ames.
