1 2 BY GRUNDBERG, ROBERTS, SHEY, DOLECHECK, EDDIE,
1 3 METCALF, BAUDLER, BOGGESS, ELGIN, KETTERING, ALONS,
1 4 SIEVERS, BOAL, JENKINS, JOHNSON, KLEMME, DRAKE,
1 5 BROERS, VAN FOSSEN, HOVERSTEN, FINCH, De BOEF,
1 6 and REKOW
1 7 A Concurrent Resolution supporting the admission of the
1 8 Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to
1 9 the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
1 10 WHEREAS, the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and
1 11 Lithuania are free, democratic, and independent
1 12 nations with a long and proud history; and
1 13 WHEREAS, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization
1 14 (NATO) is dedicated to the preservation of the freedom
1 15 and security of its member nations; and
1 16 WHEREAS, the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and
1 17 Lithuania desire to share in both the benefits and
1 18 obligations of NATO in pursuing the development,
1 19 growth, and promotion of democratic institutions and
1 20 ensuring free market economic development; and
1 21 WHEREAS, those nations recognize their
1 22 responsibilities as democratic nations and wish to
1 23 exercise these responsibilities in concert with
1 24 members of NATO; and
1 25 WHEREAS, the Baltic States desire to become part of
1 26 NATO's efforts to prevent the extremes of nationalism;
1 27 and
1 28 WHEREAS, the security of the United States is
1 29 dependent upon the stability of central Europe; NOW
1 30 THEREFORE,
2 1 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
2 2 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly
2 3 supports the admission of the Baltic States of
2 4 Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to the North Atlantic
2 5 Treaty Organization.
2 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
2 7 Resolution be sent by the Chief Clerk of the House of
2 8 Representatives to the President of the United States;
2 9 the President of the Senate of the United States; the
2 10 Committee on Foreign Relations of the Senate of the
2 11 United States; the Speaker of the House of
2 12 Representatives of the United States; the Committee on
2 13 International Relations of the House of
2 14 Representatives of the United States; and members of
2 15 Iowa's congressional delegation.
