Senate Study Bill 3181

Bill Text

PAG LIN
  1 1 Section 1. Section 256.11, subsection 5, paragraph g, Code
1 2 1999, is amended by striking the paragraph and inserting in
1 3 lieu thereof the following:
1 4 g. All students physically able shall be required to
1 5 participate in physical education activities during each
1 6 semester they are enrolled in school. A minimum of one-eighth
1 7 unit each semester is required.
  1 8 EXPLANATION
1 9 This bill abolishes all of the current exemptions to the
1 10 physical education participation requirement for students in
1 11 grades nine through 12. The bill retains the current
1 12 requirement within the education standards which provides that
1 13 all students physically able must participate in physical
1 14 education activities during each semester. The students are
1 15 required to complete a minimum of one-eighth unit per
  1 16 semester.
1 17 Currently, under the Code, students can receive an
1 18 exemption if the student's parent or guardian submits a
1 19 request in writing and the student meets certain requirements.
1 20 A twelfth grade student can be excused to enroll in academic
1 21 courses or athletic programs, or to participate in a
  1 22 cooperative or work-study program.
1 23 Also under the current Code, students in grades nine
1 24 through 11 may be excused in order to enroll in academic
1 25 courses, but must be a participant in an athletic program
1 26 requiring at least as much participation per week as one-
1 27 eighth unit of physical education.
