1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY COMMITTEE ON RULES AND ADMINISTRATION
1 3 A Senate Resolution honoring Senator Elaine Szymoniak.
1 4 WHEREAS, Senator Szymoniak is retiring from
1 5 legislative office after completing three terms in
1 6 office as a State Senator; and
1 7 WHEREAS, Senator Szymoniak's distinguished career
1 8 as a state legislator has included service as an
1 9 Assistant Minority Leader during the Seventy-eighth
1 10 General Assembly; and
1 11 WHEREAS, Senator Szymoniak has served as a member
1 12 of the Seventy-third through Seventy-eighth General
1 13 Assemblies, and will have served 12 years at the time
1 14 of her retirement; and
1 15 WHEREAS, Senator Szymoniak's distinguished career
1 16 has also included service in the Senate as Chairperson
1 17 of the Human Resources Committee and of the Human
1 18 Services Appropriations Subcommittee; as Vice
1 19 Chairperson of the Local Government Committee and the
1 20 Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee; and as
1 21 Ranking Member on the Ethics Committee and Human
1 22 Resources Committee; and
1 23 WHEREAS, Senator Szymoniak's record of service is
1 24 not limited to the Iowa General Assembly, but includes
1 25 service as a member of the Des Moines City Council
1 26 from 1977 to 1988; as Board President of the Iowa
1 27 Council for International Understanding; and on the
1 28 Boards of Directors for the House of Mercy, Urban
1 29 Dreams, and Westminster House; and
1 30 WHEREAS, Senator Szymoniak was one of four women
2 1 inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 1999
2 2 and has recently been named one of twelve Women of
2 3 Influence in Des Moines by the Business Record; and
2 4 WHEREAS, Senator Szymoniak has sponsored
2 5 legislation and been instrumental in programs to
2 6 protect children and families and to reform the
2 7 welfare system; has worked to develop the concept of
2 8 community empowerment to assist young children and to
2 9 expand options for child care for working families;
2 10 and has worked to ensure that Iowa children and
2 11 families have access to needed health care; and
2 12 WHEREAS, Senator Szymoniak has been an outspoken
2 13 leader and mediator in the area of health and human
2 14 services, and has labored diligently to reach
2 15 consensus on many sensitive human services issues, in
2 16 order to serve the needs of children and families in
2 17 Iowa; and
2 18 WHEREAS, Senator Szymoniak has served honorably and
2 19 has unselfishly given of her time and efforts to
2 20 further the interests of the State of Iowa and to
2 21 provide beneficial programs for the citizens of Iowa,
2 22 and has been an influential and devoted legislator in
2 23 this state; NOW THEREFORE,
2 24 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate pay
2 25 tribute to Senator Elaine Szymoniak for her devoted
2 26 service to the Iowa General Assembly and the citizens
2 27 of this state and wish her the very best in the years
2 28 ahead; and
2 29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
2 30 this Resolution be prepared and presented to Senator
3 1 Szymoniak.
