1 3 BEHN, KING, REHBERG, VEENSTRA,
1 4 FREEMAN, KRAMER, REDWINE, BARTZ,
1 5 DRAKE, and IVERSON
1 6 A Senate Resolution to prominently display the Ten
1 7 Commandments in the Iowa Senate chamber.
1 8 WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan spoke in Moscow in
1 9 May 1988, saying that democracy is a system of
1 10 constraints of power to keep politics and government
1 11 secondary to the true sources of value found only in
1 12 family and faith; and
1 13 WHEREAS, President George Washington stated in his
1 14 farewell address that reason and experience both
1 15 forbid an expectation that national morality can
1 16 prevail in exclusion of religious principle; and
1 17 WHEREAS, the Ten Commandments contain fundamental
1 18 legal principles that provide a basis for the system
1 19 of law, justice, and social order in Iowa and the
1 20 United States; and
1 21 WHEREAS, the United States House of Representatives
1 22 has declared that display of the Ten Commandments in
1 23 the buildings of states and political subdivisions of
1 24 states should be a power reserved to the states; and
1 25 WHEREAS, the Iowa Senate finds that the success of
1 26 this nation and this state will rest on citizens'
1 27 ability to govern themselves according to the Ten
1 28 Commandments; NOW THEREFORE,
1 29 BE IT RESOLVED, That the Ten Commandments shall be
1 30 prominently displayed in the Iowa Senate chamber; and
2 1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa Senate
2 2 encourages all other Iowa state governmental bodies
2 3 and political subdivisions to also prominently display
2 4 the Ten Commandments.
