1 2 BY KRAMER and SCHUERER
1 3 A Senate Resolution honoring student volunteers Alison
1 4 Mostrom of West Des Moines and Matthew Ternus of
1 5 Vinton for their outstanding community service.
1 6 WHEREAS, Alison Mostrom, a resident of West Des
1 7 Moines, Iowa, and a senior at Valley High School, and
1 8 Matthew Ternus, a resident of Vinton, Iowa, and an
1 9 eighth-grader at Tilford Middle School, have each
1 10 achieved national recognition for exemplary volunteer
1 11 service by receiving a 2000 Prudential Spirit of
1 12 Community Award; and
1 13 WHEREAS, this prestigious award, presented by The
1 14 Prudential Insurance Company of America in partnership
1 15 with the National Association of Secondary School
1 16 Principals, honors young volunteers across America who
1 17 have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to
1 18 serving their communities; and
1 19 WHEREAS, Alison earned this award by giving
1 20 generously of her time and energy as an actor and
1 21 educator for the HOPE Drama Troupe, a group of teen
1 22 volunteers who write and perform skits that educate
1 23 children and adults about child abuse; and
1 24 WHEREAS, Matthew earned this award by giving
1 25 generously of his time and energy in starting a local
1 26 chapter of Suitcases for Kids, a suitcase donation
1 27 program for foster children; and
1 28 WHEREAS, the success of the citizens of the State
1 29 of Iowa, the strength of the state's communities, and
1 30 the overall vitality of American society depend, in
2 1 great measure, upon the dedication of young people
2 2 like Alison and Matthew who use their considerable
2 3 talents and resources to serve others; NOW THEREFORE,
2 4 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
2 5 congratulate and honor Alison Mostrom and Matthew
2 6 Ternus as recipients of the Prudential Spirit of
2 7 Community Award, recognize their outstanding record of
2 8 volunteer service, peer leadership, and community
2 9 spirit, and extend best wishes for their continued
2 10 success and happiness.
