PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 135.26 OBSTETRICAL BRACHIAL 1 2 PLEXUS PALSY REFERRALS. 1 3 The child neurology team at the university of Iowa 1 4 hospitals and clinics shall establish an obstetrical brachial 1 5 plexus palsy analysis and referral unit. The unit shall 1 6 develop and maintain a database listing clinics or programs 1 7 offered throughout the county specializing in obstetrical 1 8 brachial plexus palsy corrective surgical procedures and 1 9 treatments, the types and numbers of procedures performed in 1 10 each program, and contacts for additional information or 1 11 consultation. In every case where a diagnosis of obstetrical 1 12 brachial plexus palsy is made, either involving infants 1 13 delivered at the university hospitals and clinics, or referred 1 14 to the university hospitals and clinics, the parents or legal 1 15 guardians of an infant so diagnosed shall be made aware of the 1 16 existence of the referral unit and given the opportunity to 1 17 consult with a staff member affiliated with the unit regarding 1 18 the possibility of a referral to a facility specializing in 1 19 obstetrical brachial plexus palsy corrective procedures. 1 20 EXPLANATION 1 21 This bill provides for the establishment of an obstetrical 1 22 brachial plexus palsy referral program at the university of 1 23 Iowa hospitals and clinics. The bill provides that the child 1 24 neurology team at the university hospitals and clinics will 1 25 develop and maintain a database listing clinics or programs 1 26 offered throughout the county specializing in obstetrical 1 27 brachial plexus palsy corrective surgical procedures, the 1 28 types and numbers of procedures performed in each program, and 1 29 contacts for additional information or consultation. The bill 1 30 additionally provides that in every case when obstetrical 1 31 brachial plexus palsy is diagnosed, either involving infants 1 32 delivered at the university hospitals and clinics, or referred 1 33 there, the parents or legal guardians of the infant will be 1 34 informed of the existence of the referral unit and given the 1 35 opportunity to consult with a staff member there regarding the 2 1 possibility of surgical treatment at another facility 2 2 specializing in obstetrical brachial plexus palsy corrective 2 3 procedures. 2 4 LSB 1330SS 78 2 5 rn/sc/14
