1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___

1 3 A Concurrent Resolution requesting the Congress of the
1 4 United States to establish a national park in the
1 5 Loess Hills area of western Iowa.
1 6 WHEREAS, although loess deposits occur extensively
1 7 throughout the world, the Iowa loess deposits are
1 8 unique, with some deposits attaining the depth of
1 9 nearly 200 feet; and
1 10 WHEREAS, other loess deposits which approach the
1 11 magnitude of Iowa's Loess Hills are located in
1 12 northern China; and
1 13 WHEREAS, the Iowa Loess Hills, encompassing more
1 14 than 600,000 acres, hold an abundance of rare plant
1 15 and animal communities including some of the few
1 16 remaining plats of native prairie grasses; and
1 17 WHEREAS, the State of Iowa is establishing the
1 18 Loess Hills Pioneer State Forest which currently
1 19 includes approximately 9,000 acres of forest, grass,
1 20 and cropland; and
1 21 WHEREAS, the loess deposits are highly erodible
1 22 soils which warrant appropriate conservation
1 23 management practices to protect the land from severe
1 24 soil losses; and
1 25 WHEREAS, many areas of Iowa's Loess Hills are
1 26 suitable for multiple public uses and benefits,
1 27 including outdoor recreation, wildlife habitat, and
1 28 historical, geological, and cultural investigation;
1 29 NOW THEREFORE,
1 30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
2 1 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
2 2 of the State of Iowa requests the members of the
2 3 Congress of the United States to expeditiously pass
2 4 enabling legislation and direct the United States
2 5 Department of the Interior to establish a Loess Hills
2 6 National Park in western Iowa; and
2 7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
2 8 Resolution be transmitted to the President of the
2 9 United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States
2 10 House of Representatives, the Secretary of the United
2 11 States Department of the Interior, and the members of
2 12 Iowa's congressional delegation.
