1 1 Amend Senate File 468 as follows:
1 2 #1. Page 11, by inserting after line 15 the
1 3 following:
1 4 "__. The department of corrections shall submit a
1 5 report to the general assembly by January 10, 2000,
1 6 concerning the medical treatment of inmates at the
1 7 Fort Madison correctional facility. The study shall
1 8 examine the current method of providing medical
1 9 treatment and care to inmates through a contract with
1 10 a private entity and shall particularly study the
1 11 costs associated with providing care through the
1 12 private contract and the level of care provided to
1 13 inmates pursuant to that contract. The department
1 14 shall compare the costs and care provided at Fort
1 15 Madison with the costs and care provided at other
1 16 correctional facilities that do not provide the care
1 17 through a private contract. In addition, the
1 18 department shall solicit input from medical care
1 19 professionals, including those professionals within
1 20 the department and others, if applicable, concerning
1 21 the level of care provided to inmates at Fort Madison
1 22 and to solicit suggestions for providing a high level
1 23 of care at the facility at reasonable cost. The study
1 24 shall include a report of the findings and
1 25 recommendations of the department."
