House Study Bill 693

  1  1    Section 1.  Section 331.651, subsection 1, paragraph c,
  1  2 Code 1999, is amended to read as follows:
  1  3    c.  Be a certified peace officer recognized by the Iowa law
  1  4 enforcement academy council under chapter 80B or successfully
  1  5 complete the basic training course provided at the Iowa law
  1  6 enforcement academy's central training facility or a location
  1  7 other than the central training facility within one year of
  1  8 taking office.  The sheriff must enroll at the Iowa law
  1  9 enforcement academy or begin the basic law enforcement
  1 10 training course within one year after taking office and
  1 11 successfully complete the Iowa law enforcement academy course
  1 12 or other basic training course within two years after taking
  1 13 office.  A person shall be deemed to have completed the basic
  1 14 training course if the person meets all course requirements
  1 15 except the physical training requirements.  
  1 16                           EXPLANATION
  1 17    This bill provides that a county sheriff must enroll at the
  1 18 Iowa law enforcement academy or begin an approved basic law
  1 19 enforcement training course within one year after taking
  1 20 office and successfully complete training at the Iowa law
  1 21 enforcement academy or successfully complete the approved
  1 22 basic training course within two years after taking office.
  1 23 Under current law, the sheriff must be certified as a peace
  1 24 officer within one year after taking office.
