1 2 BY RAYHONS
1 3 A Resolution to encourage the boards of directors of
1 4 school districts to adopt a policy designating
1 5 Wednesday evening as family night.
1 6 WHEREAS, studies show that the family is the single
1 7 most important influence on a child's life; and
1 8 WHEREAS, studies also reflect that families who
1 9 spend time interacting positively with their children
1 10 tend to have children who are successful in school;
1 11 and
1 12 WHEREAS, societal changes in recent decades have
1 13 increased the numbers of two-income families, single
1 14 parents, and parents who as individuals hold more than
1 15 one job, thereby lessening the time parents can spend
1 16 with their children; and
1 17 WHEREAS, schools can act positively to nurture
1 18 families by at least one night per week avoiding the
1 19 scheduling of any school activities that would prevent
1 20 or impair the ability of a family to interact
1 21 together; and
1 22 WHEREAS, student involvement in athletic and
1 23 community activities also provides families with
1 24 opportunities to come together, improves the self-
1 25 esteem of students, and encourages stronger social
1 26 networks between students, families, and the
1 27 community; NOW THEREFORE,
1 28 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
1 29 That the boards of directors of school districts
1 30 throughout the state be encouraged to facilitate a
2 1 well-rounded education experience by promoting student
2 2 involvement in home, family, and community activities,
2 3 as well as involvement in extracurricular activities,
2 4 interscholastic athletic competitions, and other non-
2 5 school-related activities, through the adoption of a
2 6 policy that designates each Wednesday evening, after 6
2 7 p.m., during the school year as family night.
